Cursing: Why I Just Can't Be Bothered

From ancient times, people have been scared of the curses of witches and wizards, and often many times such unfortunate incidents of disease and sickness of people and livestock was blamed on the local sorcerer who felt the need to execute a curse on the surrounding folk.

In recent times of course, apart from superstitious peoples, this phenomena has been relegated to the past. There are of course many who practice magick, who do still curse, usually for revenge aimed at a target they feel has wronged them in some way. I'm not really interested in discussing the rights, wrongs or morals of this, as it's all been said before (karma, the three-fold law etc) and I don't see myself as some kind of magickal policeman.

My take on cursing has mainly always been this - I just can't be bothered! So someone has really gone out of their way to be a pain to me, even verbally taunted me. I just tend to walk away, I can't give such people any of my precious time to even look back, let alone go out of my way to perform some magick to get back at them. Why would I? I have a thousand and one other magickal projects to work on, to benefit myself and people I care about, so I'm not about to waste valuable magickal energy on such idiots as these. Normally they are like the adult version of the school bully anyway, they do it to others, because they are unhappy with themselves. I've also found that if they see they aren't getting to you anyway, they give up and move on to a new target.

There are some exceptions where I would curse, or at least use combat type magick. Normally this would include direct physical threats either to myself or loved ones, this would form a "preemptive strike" to put them out of action before they had chance to follow through.

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

Confessions Of Aleister Crowley - My Impressions

It's hard to really call this a review, as I actually didn't read the entire hefty tome in one go, but instead dipped in and out of it over a period of about a year, so my memory of certain parts is likely to be lacking. Here I will try to give my impressions.

Firstly, don't expect this book to be all Magick, Crowley had many varied interests, the other main one being Mountaineering, so expect to spend long periods reading precise details of his expeditions.

This autobiography covers in detail the period right from his early days in the Golden Dawn, right up until the foundation and subsequent demise of the Abbey Of Thelema at Cefalu, which Crowley had set up to put into practice the Law Of Thelema. Of course Crowley also talks a lot about his childhood, as the son of very strict Plymouth Brethren parents.

He talks about his first meeting with Alan Bennett (who was a highly respected adept in the Golden Dawn), who he stayed friends with for many years, even after Alan went to Ceylon to become a Buddhist Monk.

Crowley also talks about his loyalty to, and later contempt of MacGregor Mathers and the various internal battles in the Golden Dawn.

Details of the famous (or infamous) workings of the Abramelin at Boleskine House, his later meeting with his own Holy Guardian Angel in Egypt (Aiwass) and the revelation of The Book Of Law, all make for interesting reading. Not to mention Victor Neuburg and the Enochian workings which eventually lead to the invocation of Choronzon!

The final section of the book talks about the founding of the Abbey Of Thelema at Cefalu (Palermo) and the various visitors. Surprisingly, there are not many details of exactly what went on at the Abbey in terms of practices, this may have been the ideal opportunity for Crowley to have set the record straight about a few things.

Obviously, being an autobiography, the story is very much told from the point of view of Aleister Crowley, but after so much rubbish, half-truths, and sensationalist paranoia about The Great Beast, this remains something he has left in his defence.

The end is quite sad, especially the tragic death of Raoul Loveday, which according to Jane Wolfe one of the members present at the Abbey, was due to him drinking polluted water, and not some bizarre black magic ritual as the press reported at the time.

I would recommend this book to those who are really interested in Crowley and the origins of Thelema, but be warned it's a very long book, and at times hard going if you are not interested in Mountaineering!

Antara has been a practising Witch for many years, and here she shares some of her experiences and insights.

Q1 - What first got you interested in Witchcraft, and around what age?

I remember at the age of 11 being intrigued by a book on Witchcraft, published by Faber. My parents kept it on the highest shelf in the house and I wasn't supposed to read it because it was too "old" for me. I don’t think my parents could have done any more to ensure that I would eventually find a stepladder and get hold of that book. I remember hiding it in my room for ages but it was a dry and dusty tome and didn't quite contain the forbidden treasures I had hoped for.

I maintained a strong interest in the occult though (despite a year long flirtation with Christianity) until I finally found books on Paganism in the local library when I was 17. Then it slowly dawned on me that people were practising as Witches today and from there I was hooked.

Q2 - Some Witches identify as Alexandrian or Gardnerian tradition based, is this something you also do?

No. In the early days I read a lot about Alexandrian and Garderian traditions, but I was attracted to Witchcraft as an antidote to hierarchical, dogmatic and internally conservative religions and to me Alexandrian and Garderian covens seemed to be all those things. Another one of the issues I always had with them was their obsession with tracing your magical lineage back to the dawn of time. I have never felt a need to prove my authenticity in that way and so that was a big turn off.

I have no doubt that they are valuable and important traditions for many people, especially in the early days of Witchcraft when they were pioneers. I definitely recognise their important contribution to Witchcraft and Paganism but they have never sung to my soul.

Q3 - Who are your biggest influences, magically?

What a huge question!

Over the years I have read, listened and assimilated countless ideas that make up my current practice and drawn inspiration from diverse sources such as Scott Cunningham, Dion Fortune, Ann Moura, Crowley, Freya Aswynn, Starhawk, T.Thorn Coyle and Jan Fries. Scott Cunningham gave me a structure, Starhawk taught me how to break it. Dion Fortune showed me how to imagine magick working in my every day world, T.Thorn Coyle is teaching me to bring that into reality, my magickal practice has (as I am sure is the same for most people) been and will be a constant progression.

But it was really through practice and dialogue with a variety of friends from many different traditions which allowed me to shape my ideas and to continue to shape my ideas. You shouldn't underestimate the power of discussing and testing your ideas with like-minded people and it is something I will always do. I don’t think there has been one author or one mentor who has had a bigger impact than any of the others but my practice has grown very organically over the years as I have absorbed and tested and either continued or rejected a variety of practices.

The biggest breakthrough work I have done has all been through my relationship with Odin. The lessons I have learned through that relationship have probably had a bigger impact on how I use magic, particularly Rune workings, than anything else and I would certainly encourage people to develop deity relationships of their own. Practising with Odin has given me incredible insights into my craft, but those insights have required work and practice - not just reading books and attending talks and workshops.

My patron is very keen on stretching me and giving me new challenges when I am perhaps coasting a little, and we all need a bit of motivation sometimes!

Q4 - Do you subscribe to the typical Wiccan "an it harm none, do as you will" or would you ever use magick for attack?

I wouldn’t say I “subscribe” to the Wiccan Rede but rather that it is broadly aligned with the personal, ethical position I choose to adopt anyway. I want my current life in this Universe to elevate people, not harm them. I do believe that the world would be a better place and we would all benefit, if people worked harder not to harm each other. Whilst I don’t always get it perfectly right I consistently try to make choices which elevate, celebrate and empower rather than harm.

Being completely honest I wouldn't rule out using magick for attack if my life was immediately under threat (or similar extreme circumstances applied). If someone tried to physically attack me then I wouldn't see anything wrong in hitting back to defend myself and I don’t see magick any differently. In fact I am considerably better at magick than I am at hitting; but there are rarely situations where defensive magicks wouldn’t simply serve the same purposes.

I don't ever see myself sitting quietly in my ritual space cursing someone. To use magick for attack (other than in the first example of immediate danger) requires you to spend a lot of time and energy thinking about your subject. You might be ruminating on why they deserve that attack or planning how you will execute it and frankly this is not a valuable way to spend my time and energy. Exerting energy on attacking another person in this way to me seems like a total waste of time I could be spending on any number of other projects like; getting a closer relationship with my Deities, campaigning against domestic violence, or just relaxing with a good book – all of these things would be better for me and my life and the community I live in rather than attacking and I am jealous of my time. Also I think that spending time and energy on attacking someone in this way (regardless of the excellent reasons) is a probably keeping you in a pretty negative headspace and that isn’t a headspace I want to live in.

I think for me the question of a magickal attack comes down to “Why would I bother?” since there are, likely, a number of more productive ways to resolve the situation at hand which will elevate me and the people around me. So it really comes down to the fact that I can imagine almost no circumstances where there isn't just a better way of doing things.

I mean “you” generally of course not “you” as in Phil or your lovely readers.

Q5. How do you incorporate Witchcraft into your daily life (for example, do you devote yourself to particular Deities or celebrate special days)?

I try and do a daily magical practice to keep my magickal muscles as fit and strong as possible. When I am really in tune with my magick, life just flows. This practice takes a number of forms, meditation, resonating runes, blogging about Witchcraft, touching in with my Deities etc. I find that having a personal relationship with my Deities where sometimes I just seek to share my space with them for a time is particularly rewarding.

Since moving my altar into the living room, I have completely changed the way I use it in a really positive way. It has become this living, breathing, magical presence in the room in which I spend most of my time and I am still learning about how to integrate this presence into my life. At the moment this is probably the one single thing which is helping to bring my Witchcraft into every aspect of my life – and I really didn’t expect it too!

I do observe the Eight Sabbats of the year; whether participating in a big ritual or celebration or making simple and quiet acknowledgement that the seasons are shifting. I find I am very sensitive to the different energies generated by the land, climate, seasons and cycle of natures etc.; if I don't take the time to re-attune every so often then I get out of sorts, tired and even grumpy! The Eight Sabbats obviously follow a natural cycle of seasons and the agricultural calendar so they still hold great practical significance for me as well as being representative of periods in the year which have big energetic significances. Outside of the Sabbats generally I think that ritualised festivals (whatever your tradition) are spiritually nourishing for the human soul. Preparing for and participating in festivals of any sort is hugely uplifting and really refills my energy well.

Enochian Dream Skrying Experiment - Failure

Enochian Dream Skrying - Experimental!

As I don't seem to have the time or energy to do much ritual magick lately, I have decided to try and finish skrying the Enochian Aethyrs, but this time through dreams.

This is very experimental, I've not come across anyone who has done this before.

Process:

- Before getting ready to sleep, I will recite the Call of Aethyrs and Vibrate the names of the governors (a quick banishing may also be a good idea).

- I will then close my eyes and try to drift off to sleep.

- I will make a note of any visions as I have my eyes closed, or anything that appears in a dream.

The next Aethyr to skry is 22 - Lin.

Results from last night very poor, I vaguely remember something about the number three, and some visions trying to "get through".

I think I should try again tonight with the same Aethyr and process. It may take a while for this to work.

Book Review: Aleister Crowley And The Aeon Of Horus By Paul Weston

Firstly, don't think this is just another book about Aleister Crowley, as it definitely isn't! This book is more about looking at how the Book of The Law, the text that was received by Crowley from his Holy Guardian Angel, Aiwass, can be seen to be predicting a new Aeon (the Aeon of Horus) and a shift in human consciousness. Crowley is the “Prophet” or “Messiah” charged with ushering in this new age.

Crowley is seen not as an evil black magician, and Paul Weston has done much research to disprove some of the half-truths and general unfounded rumours that caused the Great Beast to be seen as the “wickedest man in the world”.

This book explores the events, people and currents that can be seen to be pointers to this new Aeon of Horus, the God of War who would bring about destruction starting with World War Two in 1939.

The book also looks at the magical revival, which Crowley is undeniably the major player in.

Psychedelia and ET phenomena are also explored as undeniable evidence that a shift in consciousness was happening.

This book covers so many interesting people and events, from World War Two and Hitler, to Witchcraft and Conspiracy Theories.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone, not just those interested in Aleister Crowley, but anyone interested in the history of Occult, and especially the Nazi involvement and interest in the Occult. I found this book very hard to put down once I had started it! The only criticism I would make is that addition of footnotes referring the interested reader to further research material would have been a good idea.

I think I may have touched on this subject briefly before.

One of the things that really annoys me and many other magicians no doubt, are the typical "I'm new to magick" or "I'm new to [such and such a type of magic]" and then there is an email from someone who basically is bone idle lazy, and expects you to do all the work for them. They don't want to do any research of their own, they don't want to look on lists of recommended books for themselves. They also want you to write in an individual email to them, an overview of the theory, practices, how to get started etc.

In times past, I used to do this (way too nice I know), and then would often find I didn't even receive a "thank you"! It's almost as though me, and everyone else they send these emails to, they expect are there just to provide a free public service!

One person I replied to in an email, was new to sigils, and so I wrote in quite a nice concise email, a brief summary of how sigils worked....I didn't even receive a "thanks for your time"!

Recently, I received an email from someone saying they are new to Enochian Magick, and were looking for help, where to get started, books I would recommend etc. I just thought to myself, hey, that's all on my blog, my website, and also if they are bothered to do a google search would find many websites, blogs and books from more knowledgeable, experienced and publicly acclaimed authors than myself. So, NO! I will not do your research for you, if you are serious about Enochian Magick, do what I did, do it yourself you lazy idiot! There is no place in magick for this attitude of: I want this, I want that, I want the other, all wrapped up in a ribbon, but I don't want to give anything or do anything in return!

You do your own research, buy books, or pay your money and take a course by a more experienced magician (in whatever area of magick you are interested in), or you join a magical order for training. Each of these options entails some kind of "cost", either in terms of time, commitment or money. However, you don't just sit back, fire off emails from the "Contact" button on profiles/pages, and expect individual magical training with nothing in return, especially if you can't be bothered to even say "thanks"!

With the advent of the Internet, most of the material and books that in previous ages magicians would have to spend much time and endure personal risk to acquire, is now available at the click of a button. There is no excuse!

So, it's my policy now to simply ignore these kind of emails.

Truth is a funny old thing. Many people search for it, some claim to have found it, others say they haven't, to which they reply - yes I have so there!

What initially attracted me to Chaos Magick, was the idea that there is no truth, just models and paradigms which can be useful for as long as we need them. I had spent most of my young life searching for truth, which led me to fundamentalist religion. When I had matured, and seen life in all of it's perplexing and bizarre paradoxical forms, and seen the problems having a monopoly on "truth" caused, and the endless quest for that "Ultimate Absolute Truth" I realised that if you take one of the T's out of TRUTH and re-arrange the letters, you get a bit closer to the mark = HURT. How many people have been killed or denied their basic rights as creatures sharing this planet, because someone or some group claim - THEY HAVE THE TRUTH.

Chaos Magick is often misunderstood by some of the more "traditional" schools of magick because we are seen as not caring about finding truths, we just apparently masturbate over sigils and don't ever take a serious approach to anything.

The actual "Neophyte Ritual" presented in Liber Kaos asks:

"Candidate, do you know that there may be no ultimate truths?"

To which the candidate replies "I do".

The problem with TRUTH is that it's not fixed, there may be no ultimate truths which never change - so we can build a computer and say HA HA, there it is, the truth is 42! Then find we have to build another to come up with the question that 42 is the answer to! Taking some examples, it may have once been true to say that man couldn't fly, but when the airplane was invented that was no longer the truth. It may have once been true that we couldn't split the Atom and so on. At this point you may be saying - oh, yes but you are now talking about what man once believed were truths at certain points in history, which were later disproved. At this point I say:

There may be no absolute truths.....

Check the expiry date on your Truths, you may realise that is where that dam awful smell is coming from!

Being Discrete

Yesterday, I had to do something I thought I would never do, take down my Altar, or at least make it less obvious and more like a normal table.

I had to do this, because of the increase lately in visits from people who don't know me, and I don't have a seperate room to use as a Temple. Some people will pretend not to notice, but you can tell by their eyes, they are thinking "what the hell is all that about"? Some people will just come right out and say "what is that"? This then leads into a whole discussion of magick, which if I'm honest, I would rather not have at this time with someone unless they are genuinely interested, and don't see it as something dangerous or weird.

Of course, the most annoying one comes from people saying "oh well, why don't you just do some magick and make yourself well again"? Ha ha ha! I wish I had a needle and thread to sow up my sides that is so amusing - to which I feel like saying - I do, but like medical science, occult science is not exact and there are no guarantees!

So, for now, to avoid lots of silly conversations that lead nowhere, I'll dismantle my altar at the end of rituals and workings.

How Satan Saved My Soul

Some people who know me are aware of my current "battle" with quite a serious illness. It had reached a point recently where constant pain, very little quality of life and various other things had almost caused me to give up.

I had accepted that maybe my "incarnation" in this body was maybe over. It was while reading The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey, and another book about the Left Hand Path and a few other bits and pieces that made me stop and say - bullshit! This body still has some life in it yet, I haven't even been told what treatment the doctors have planned next. There is also still magick to add to any results medical science can "produce".

Conventional Religion and Mysticism give people a hope in a god who has their best interests at heart, even through suffering, and after that a brighter future in some kind of paradise.

The Mage relies on no such well meaning sentiments and pie in the sky theology.

Where Angels Fear To Tread

I've titled this post - "Where Angels Fear To Tread", because it touches on the subject of danger in Magick.

I've spoken to various people in the past, who have often claimed to be Magicians, but have been shocked when I talk about the work I have done - i.e. Goetia, Enochian and the HGA/Abramelin. They have seen such things as dangerous, and one said to me "I hope you used the results wisely - remember it will come back to you in Karma". When I asked him what he was currently working on his reply was - "oh, I haven't done any Ritual Magick for years". I breathed a long sigh, and decided to terminate our communication. I often look for advice and guidance, but from someone who actually has some wealth of experience!

The point is this - do you want to simply dabble at Magick? Do a weekly candle burning ritual out of Magick For Micky Mouse (the book doesn't exist - please don't try to find it), plant a few seeds while muttering a few well meaning verses and all the other stuff that is nice and safe - and boring!

OR

Do you want to steal the fire from Heaven, storm the Gates of Hell, and do Magick that changes things on all levels?

The choice is yours - but remember that if you want to play safe and not do anything that is seen to be dangerous, then you may never experience the time when the whole universe seems to bend to your Will.

Would the big names such as Aleister Crowley, John Dee, Eliphas Levi, not to mention the modern Mages be so well known if they stuck had to systems that were nice and easy. For example John Dee must have felt very uncomfortable being a religious man, when the Enochian Angels told him to share his wife with Kelly, this meant putting his very Soul at risk!

Also, if you see Enochian or Goetia as dangerous, but not systems like the Qabalah, you may not realise that any system operated without due caution and respect that is due to it's paradigms guardians, spirits and entities, can be your undoing!

Be cautious, but don't be put off exploring a system, just because it is seen as dangerous, or dark. This is what happened for many many years with Voodoo, and we lost out big time!

Whistle and the walls will fall at your command!

Fart and you may just blow up the House Of Commons!

When Magick Dosen't Work

What about when you have done a ritual or working, but it hasn't worked? The result you wanted hasn't manifested.

You start to think, and come up with some ideas:

1. I did it wrong, for example didn't banish properly.
2. The paradigm/system is at fault or flawed in some way.
3. Failure to "paradigm shift".
4. Lust of result caused a battle between the conscious/unconscious mind.
5. Failure to focus the Will and achieve the necessary state.
6. Others lack of belief.

Some possible solutions:

1. Make sure you take the time to get it right in future!
2. Change the paradigm/system?
3. Immerse yourself more fully in the paradigm, simply believing for a little while may not be enough, living the paradigm for a while may be needed.
4. Try using sigils or some other indirect method to avoid the lust of result.
5. Practice training your Will and achieving altered states (this is an ongoing process).
6. Keep your work secret, and allow only other magicians who you know to be more experienced take part in the work.

And sometimes...there may be no answers.

It could also have worked, but not in the way you intended!

Alphabet of Desire

In Liber Null, Peter Carroll talks about the "Alphabet of Desire".

The basis of the Alphabet of Desire (which was originally a concept from the work of A. O. Spare), is that every emotion (apart from Laughter, which is it's own opposite), follows a dual pattern. Learning to ride these emotions, by exploring the Alphabet Of Desire allows the magician to be in control of these emotions, rather than at their mercy.

The main forms of duality (which are then expanded into principles) being: Sex/Death, Love/Hate, Desire/Fear, Pleasure/Pain, Elation/Depression.

Peter Carroll gives for each of these twenty one principles, a picture (glyph) and a brief textual description, along with some correspondences (planetary, alchemical etc).

I have started creating my own Alphabet of Desire, allowing my unconscious mind to bring fourth a picture for each principle, and then picking a Tarot card that represents that particular emotion for me. I believe it's important for every magician to create their own Alphabet of Desire, as ultimately we are dealing here with our own unconscious mind and emotions, and it could become a powerful magical tool for emotional engineering. I hope to publish a more detailed write up on my website at a later date.

Practical Sigil Magick

This post is based on the answer to a question I received about sigil magic. Whether you always must forget the sigil. This is just my honest and humble opinion, and I'm sure some will disagree, but I guess sigil magick is a highly personal form of magick anyway.

The principle behind sigils is very simple, and was originally a system developed and used by A. O. Spare, and later became one of they key techniques of Chaos Magic.

Basically, sigils work by avoiding the normal "lust of result" problem that is inherent in other forms of magick, where you do a working/ritual, and then there is a battle between the conscious and unconscious mind, where your conscious mind is coming up with things like "is it working yet", "I hope it works". The statement of intent is encoded into the sigil in such a way that the key elements (such as the basic shapes of letters) are still present, but in a form only the unconscious mind recognises, which bypasses the conscious mind and avoids this battle between the conscious mind and it's doubts, and allows the unconscious mind to act on the desire.

The sigil is created, charged during an altered state of consciousness - or gnosis (this may be a ritual, sex, a strong emotion, there are many ways of charging sigils), then it is normally lost, forgotten, destroyed, burned, etc. Now, you don't need to actually forget the sigil, just what the sigil is meant to do, so you avoid the lust of result that I mentioned above. A sigil may well be kept, until you no longer remember what it's for. For example, I have a "Hypersigil" that I turned into a painting, and it is on my wall, I see it everyday. but I no longer remember the actual statement of intent. You can also create lots of sigils, then charge them randomly when you have forgotten what each one is for. One of the things I tried was creating lots of sigils, shuffle them like a deck of cards, then randomly charge them.

Of course, there are also times when the sigil is kept, and is associated with the magical working, such as when creating a servitor, and because you know or at least have an idea of what the servitor is meant to do, does this mean that the sigil has lost some of it's potency (except maybe when you use it to activate the servitor via someone who doesn't know what it is)? That's an interesting question to explore I think.

I've been doing some considerable research and experimentation with the Goetia (Lesser Key Of Solomon).

There are, many views on exactly what the Goetic Demons are. Some say they are actually demons in the traditional Judeo-Christian sense of the word. Others, that they are mainly pagan Gods, gone, but not forgotten that got labelled as "demons" by the monotheistic religions that displaced them. Another, interesting idea I will explore, if only briefly in my next book, is the idea that they are "Jinn", creatures that were created by God from smokeless fire (rather than fallen angels), this is an Islamic idea that can be found in the Koran, where Solomon is seen to cause these Jinn to work for him.

Infections and Entities, Science and Shamanism

Recently, I found my immune system wiped out again.

I fell asleep and slipped into a state where my astral form was in control. I was confronted with what appeared to be some horrible demon trying to attack me. I recognised this as the source of some infection, and immediately started fighting it, eventually performing the Lesser Banishing Ritual of The Pentagram to throw it off.

In modern times, many of those who adhere purely to the "doctrines" of modern science would laugh at a shaman who travels into the spirit world to talk to and intercess with the spirits causing the disease, on behalf of the patient. Such "primitive" approaches are no longer valid they would argue, modern science can show that the viruses and other infections driving the disease can be clearly shown through various tests, without having to rely on the idea of spirits and such nonsense.

Ok, so the shamans may not have the scientific knowledge to understand the process of infection the way modern science does, but both modern science and shamans know there is some "entity" (in the loosest sense of the word) behind infection and disease, whether you see it to be a spirit or cell(s) that are causing the disease or infection.

There are people who have seen shamans who have recovered.

There are people who have undergone chemotherapy who have recovered.

Take all options available.

All that matters are the end results.

Reflections On The Magickal Journey So Far

Some things I have experienced, learned or still ponder regarding my magickal journey so far:

Magick is hard work.

99.9% of dabblers in magick think they know more than those who have spent years researching, practising, experimenting with, and fine tuning their magickal techniques, skills and knowledge. Trying to convince such individuals that they may not be as seasoned an expert as they believe is pointless - pearls before swine. Let them wallow in their own crap!

Some magicians claim their system is the best, some may even claim it's the only one worth bothering with. Treat as above. Any magickal system that works....well...works! Each to their own, different strokes etc.

Magick is fun, sometimes entertaining, nearly always interesting, and sometimes scary, but in a good way.

Saying you are a magician will interest some, repel or scare away others, and also attract more than a few nutters.

Magick will not give you immunity from problems either physical, mental or spiritual, but it will provide you with the right tools to deal with these problems in some way.

Don't let others cramp your style, remember (or read about it in Aleister Crowley's Illustrated Goetia) how Lon DuQuette had a very well respected magickal teacher who told him not to touch the Goetia as it was "low magick", teachers are great as guides, but remember they are human and bring their own particular experiences and opinions to the table, both good, bad and indifferent.

Gaining the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel is a terrifying and intense working but also liberating and brings joy and peace that words can't begin to describe.

EELSTREN Healing Servitor Update

Currently the servitor is also at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham (it was activated using it's sigil and soundtrack) learning all it can about cancer. This will produce a more specialised healing servitor that has some expert knowledge.

BBC News Story - Religion May Become Extinct In Nine Nations

I this interesting news story today. According to a mathematical model and using census data, religion may well become extinct in nine nations.

What also caught my eye was an advert campaign on the side of buses by the British Humanist Association - "NOT RELIGIOUS? IN THIS YEARS CENSUS SAY SO".

Are we moving away from religion? Are the churches empty because for many people, the model just dosen't work? The days of everyone going to church on sunday are obviously over now, but what has religion done?

It has caused many wars and deaths, led to intollerance and hatred.
However, it has also given us some great literature, built and staffed hospitals, not to mention caused people to do some pretty great things. Do we really need religion for this though? Don't many atheists and non-religious people also do some great things?

The answers remain to be seen. I do know when I see some people who have "converted" and changed their ways, who were basically pretty useless specimens of our race before, I can't help saying I would rather have them praising God in church, than walking the streets with a knife. So maybe "the opium of the people" does have a use after all.

The Power Of Om

Recently, I have been concentrating mainly on exploring Meditation, Yoga and various eastern techniques and philosophies.

Meditation to me is ultimately about interrupting the trance of daily life, and thoughts that take over our minds, often without us realising it. Our inner life is very important, and obviously thoughts both negative and positive can have a major influence on us, this is an essential thing to grasp for anyone beginning magical practice, and even seasoned magicians can often get carried away with the more advanced techniques and forget about the basics of meditation and control of the mind and Will.

One of the techniques I have been experimenting with (not for the first time in my practice) is the use of mantras. I decided to use a very simple and the most obvious one which of course is - "Om".

Om, is an ancient Sanskrit word, and if I remember correctly from reading Crowley's book "Magic In Theory And Practice", Crowley believed it, and it's derivatives to be a very powerful magical word.

So, I used this word during my meditation practice, first of all saying it silently in my mind, and then I found myself saying it out loud, softly at first. It then became louder, and I found different tones started to emanate and almost evolve. Eventually this became a vibration, rather than simply a word, or even a sound. It became a vibration that linked me with some kind of cosmic essence, and the vibration enlivened and empowered my body, filling it with energy. At this point all distracting thoughts also seemed to disappear.

I would be interested to hear from anyone else who has any similar experiences.

Your Magickal System Dosen't Work!

I listened to a podcast recently where a magician and author made a sweeping statement that systems like chaos magick and thelema didn't work, and that magicians in these traditions proved it by their "inflated egos". He wrote Crowley off completely and many others.

While we all have our own magical paths to follow, and one persons path may not be for you, simply talking to a few people from different traditions and paths and instantly deciding the system doesn't work, because you don't like them or their ideas conflict with yours.....well, that's just dam crazy! Have you tried working with the system to get results...the proof of the pudding is in the eating after all? If you have tried the system and it didn't work for you, this doesn't mean it's a useless system, maybe it just doesn't push your buttons, it doesn't use a symbol set that you can relate to? Also, maybe you need to create your own symbol set and system that works for you (as many chaos magicians do, and yes, it does work for them).

Now, I like ceremonial magick, goetia, enochian and thelema, especially the idea of a Holy Guardian Angel "floats my boat" and get's me results. Of course classic chaos magick methods such as sigils, servitors, paradigm shifting and all that jazz does too!

Wicca doesn't really do it for me, and I've met some bizarre and slightly mad people "claiming" to be witches. However, I would never just write this magical system off, that would be crazy, as many people practise witchcraft and it works for them, why on earth would I? I've maybe not even met people who are following the Wiccan path with any serious commitment, but simply do a few spells now and again and invoke the goddess when they feel like it (I believe they are called "blessed wannabes").

Come on guys and gals, lets stop arguing about whose magical system is better and works and just get on with it, lets leave all that crap to the people who are still arguing about religion and dogma!

Don't trash a good servitor!

One of the first servitors I created, was a divination servitor. It worked quite well, he (I called him "nosy") would even do things like find lost objects for me. I would also obviously ask his help when doing Tarot readings and such.

It did however come to a point where I stopped using him, he just sort of drifted into the background. I didn't loose any more objects for a while, and my Tarot readings, well, I guess I was just trying to not rely on a servitor.

So, instead of just leaving him sort of crying in the corner not being used, to go his own way, wind down or whatever. I decided to absorb his power into myself, so I created a simple ritual where I imagined myself absorbing his energy.

The interesting thing is, I found quite to my surprise, as I had forgotten I had done the ritual, that a few months later my powers of intuition suddenly seemed to be improved greatly.

The moral of this story - don't leave a good servitor to simply fade away, or worse destroy it, that's useful magical energy....grab it.....absorb it!

The Azathoth Rite

“from chaos you came and to chaos you will return”

“we travel to the stars and from the stars”

This was a ritual to invoke the God Azathoth, and is described in Liber Kaos: The Psychonomicon by Peter Carroll on pages 147-151.

The aim of this rite is to gain the knowledge and conversation of the egrogore known as Azathoth, the Blind Mad God at the Centre of Chaos that H.P. Lovecraft encountered (only a fragment remains of the unfinished story by Lovecraft).

You may also ask for practical results that are compliant with the nature of Azathoth.

The ritual involves anointing with your own blood (just a small amount from your thumb will do, don’t forget to pass the needle through a flame to sanitize it) the pentacle of Azathoth gazing at it and closing your eyes or using a blindfold, then invoking the God using a special call, and start saying the letters of the alphabet until glossolalia is formed and the God is called from his abode.

These are my results of the working.

I carried out the procedure as in Liber Kaos, including banishing with GPR, and anointing the pentacle with fresh blood from thumb.

After shouting out/saying letters randomly for a short time glossolalia quickly occurred. After this came a sense of being “taken over” by something old, and a primeval language that was angry, harsh and yet elegant, with ideas of syntax was being uttered from my lips. There was no difficulty on my part, the language was not coming from my mind, I was now the channel of Azathoth. At the same time, the entity was speaking things into my mind, about it’s nature, and the nature of the other “ancient ones”.

The first message was that they will return to earth, when the planet is destroyed by ourselves. All along the Ancient Ones have planned to take back the planet by the process of us wiping ourselves out, and because we are so stupid, constantly having wars etc, it is much easier to do this.

“FROM CHAOS YOU CAME TO CHAOS YOU WILL RETURN”*

When I asked where they come from, the entity said:

“WE TRAVEL TO THE STARS AND WE COME FROM THE STARS”.

This may mean, they left (or some left) our planet, to return at the later time, maybe leaving “guardians” or lesser creatures deep in the earth, as I’m sure I have read somewhere in H. P. Lovecraft’s tales.

I also asked if he would make the material result I asked for manifest, to which he seemed to say yes. I still have to try this out, and will maybe post the results too, but until then the result I asked for will remain secret.

After a while, Azathoth finally said “I’m finished with you”. I lay collapsed on the floor for a little while, then got up and coughed for a while feeling the last “residue” of the entity finally leave.

I then “sobered” myself up, by repeating aloud my name, where I lived, my history etc.

I did a final GPR to banish, then went off to another room to do something else.

The whole experience seemed to invigorate me, and maybe even strengthen my connection to my HGA.

Points to note:
- I probably wouldn’t do this again without an assistant to play the part of exorcist and help bring me around again. I did manage to “sober up”, but it really was a very deep experience. This is not like the times I have carried out the Mass Of Chaos to invoke Baphomet, where without a group the effect seems to be somewhat less of a possession.

- What I believe the entity told me may not fit with everything in the H.P. Lovecraft Mythos, and whether it is true or not, well what is truth anyway?

- Is the Necronomicon completely fictional, it's gods and creatures purely coming from the mind of Lovecraft? Only you yourself can decided that one!

*As in many creation stories, legends of the world being created from chaos. The Bible (and the earlier legends that were adapted for the creation story in Genesis), the Egyptian creation story et al.

Goetia and The Enochian Calls

There is some evidence to suggest that in later years Crowley just used the first and second enochian calls in his Goeitc evocations, rather than all the preliminary invocations. So this is what I've started experimenting with.

Battling The Giants

I had a problem with one of the large mobile networks (they will remain nameless), making certain threats and sending a very nasty debt recovery company after me, after they had ignored the letters from me.

I had exhausted all normal methods, and realised I was battling against a very large company who passed on their debt collection issues to a company that operates by using loopholes in the current laws regarding fair treatment of debtors.

I knew battling a massive telecoms company using magick would be quite hard, but I decided to try an experiment.

I created a collage with no particular statement of intent, just a general idea of how I would like to see this large company dealt justice. There was no "lust of result" and I just enjoyed creating the collage as a little art project.

The other week, I saw on TV that this mobile network had been taken to court and were being investigated because of issues with their mobile contracts and performance.

Result I think!

When I first started seriously reading and studying occult texts as part of my own training, study and research, I would sometimes make the mistake of seeing one thing an author said that I strongly disagreed with or it offended me deeply....then closing the book and thinking everything else they knew or had to say was also at best inaccurate and ignorant, or downright wrong.

I would assume, they had a "closed mind", maybe at certain times they did, but also I was showing I also had a closed mind and couldn't see the value of someone else's work and knowledge because they held some theory, opinions, ideas or concepts that didn't fit with my own, or that were no longer relevant in today's world (there are of course valid points to be made that what was right for one culture or time in history, is no longer right for us, but this is a different matter).

To give an example. I started reading the Mystical Qabalah By Dion Fortune. I then came to a part where she was talking about homosexuality as a sickness, I immediately shut the book, threw a tantrum and placed it with a thud on my bookshelf with the aim of never trying to read it again. After a while I pondered on this, knowing what I had read about Dion Fortune that she was one of the early "psychoanalysts". The early psychoanalysts had some theories that homosexuality was a sickness which could be cured, which was a very popular idea then, which lasted up to quite modern times (I had seen things about aversion therapy which was given as "the cure" anyone wishing to research this should find a plethora of information). I had also read Dion Fortune had some issues with sexuality in general.

Yet Dion Fortunes' text on the Qabalah, though at times quite hard to read, is still a very valuable occult text on the subject, and she does shed light on some things that pave the way for your own practical workings. I actually quite like this book now, and it is still on my bookshelf and gets used when I need a reference.

Despite her faults, Dion was a female magician in what was at the time very much mainly a mans magical world (just count how many female magicians from that time wrote and had such an influence on magic) and a pretty good one too, going on to found her own order "The Society Of Inner Light".

I read some more about her life, and despite her faults, I know if I met Dion, I wouldn't share many of her opinions or ideas, but I get the feeling she was warm and quite genuine, if slightly shy, repressed and troubled at times. So I think she would be one those people who I would take an instant like to.

The moral of this story - don't throw out the baby with the bathwater, don't just stop reading a book because the author offends you or says something you really don't agree with. Give it a chance, read on a bit more at least, you may just learn something useful, or be inspired to try something new!

Do You....Voodoo?

As I find myself with some time on my hands, I'm now looking at putting together some material for my next book.

Themes like the Holy Guardian, The Goetia, Enochian etc, are pretty straight forward, as they are western traditions, lots of information that the western mind can understand.

The problem then comes with Voodoo, which is actually only spelled as "Voodoo" when referring to the New Orleans variant of the tradition. The Haitian tradition is normally referred to as "Vodou" or "Vodoun". There are many other related traditions too such as Santeria and Candomble. The problem is, there are very few good books on these traditions, and many mix up the traditions without clearly explaining the background, and some even blend in lots of other unrelated magical traditions, without any idea that they are not related.

Many years of ignorance on the part of westerners, and the media telling us voodoo is all zombies and sticking pins in dolls (which is actually more folk magic than a particular voodoo tradition) have also led to some problems, and retained a certain stigma that people who practice voodoo just drink animal blood, curse people and are generally primitive. Studying voodoo properly does reveal quite a beautiful religion.

One of the things I tend to look for when buying books on voodoo and related traditions now is:

- Is the Author an initiated priest?
- Does the book have good reviews?
- Is it just a recipe book on how to stick pins in dolls and perform curses?

When I was recently in hospital, one of the nurses saw I was reading The Illuminatus!: Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson, which sparked an interesting conversation! He seemed convinced the Illuminati were real, and that there were a group of elite, rich and powerful men controlling the world. This is quite a popular conspiracy theory, and people like David Icke say the Illuminati are really in control.

Soft Toy Magick

Many of us as kids, have teddy bears or soft toys of some kind (in the US I believe they are called "plushies"). We often have a favourite, the one that smells of various bodily fluids, and is in need of repair, but we cry if our parents try to take it away!

This is a magical item - more powerful than any fetish, it holds our tears and feels our pain, it has a name, and becomes an entity in its own right.

We grow up, we leave such silly items behind, and we instead buy cars and computers that we give names to, and lavish our affection and attention on.

GET A BEAR!

Name it, hug it at night, whisper your wishes, cry your tears of sadness or joy into it, take it with you when you feel you need to, swap it with a friend and get theirs in return to create a magical link. This in effect could become a servitor.

Silly? Childish?

Isn't this just like the Guatemala worry dolls? Or a magical fetish?

Welcome to the mad world of chaos magick (after all, you can't take your car to bed at night and hug it).

I now return to magical practice, after a break of just over a month.

It was an interesting experience, stripped of my magical powers....or so I thought!

Firstly...you don't always need to do a working to make something magical happen. I was getting back into reading Tolkiens Lord Of The Rings books, and wanted to start from the beginning with The Silmarillion, as usual, the copy in the book shop had a hefty price tag (ok, I'm tight sometimes)! Then I thought, wouldn't it be cool, if I just walked into the charity shop, and could get a copy for 50p? A few days later, that is exactly what happened, there it was staring at me!

Secondly, toward the end of my break, I had another out of body experience, which was powerful, slightly unnerving, but later exhilarating.

So I return, with a renewed commitment to the Great Work. I also return with a new name that seems more appropriate for now.

A short break

I am now taking a short break from all magical practice and study (unless group work requires a temporary re-integration), while I tend to some other pressing personal issues.

Also, it will be interesting to compare and contrast living a non-magical life, with living a magical life. Many of us are plagued by doubts about whether this "magick stuff" is all really worth it.

Many never dare to find out, we cling to magic like a religion, scared we may fall apart. Many have been "doing magic" so long, they forget what life was like before. It's the anology of an elderly person always "tut tutting" at a child, forgetting what it was like to be a child.

Some things to explore:
"Can I get a new job without doing magic"?
"Can I find a new lover without doing magic"?
"Can I resolve difficult situations without doing magic"?

I also hope that I will become a better grounded person and Occultist by so doing.

At the end of this short break, I'll present a report of my brief excursion back to "normality".

Chaos Illumination

As I successfully conclude a week long period of Chaos Monasticism, and reflect on some of my experiences so far, both in my magical career and life in general, I am often struck by how many people who call themselves "masters", "teachers", "leaders", "managers", "directors" and various other titles have learned very little about life, and also about themselves.

I would rather admit my mistakes and learn from them, ignorance is never bliss.

There are many old fools, and wise young sages.

As I start work on my second book, where I talk about the methods I used, and the results I had in gaining the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel, the Goetia, The Enochian System and also my recent workings in Voodoo and associated traditions, I am tempted to say what Chaos Illumination is to me. To me it is learning how to be anything you like, the process of self discovery and self transformation, metamorphosis, but within reason.

There are some things, I wouldn't want to change, though it seems at first sight useful.

To give an example, recently I again grew very attached to someone who didn't grow quite as attached to me, in the same amount of time that I would have liked. Whether or not this changes, only time will tell, and if it doesn't I will simply move on as I always do. I thought about maybe doing a working of enchantment on myself, so I would be more "cold" and less feeling. Then I thought, no way! Passion, feelings, developing strong emotions for someone are what makes us human, without this we would just be simple animals, who would have sex with another animal one minute, then the next tear it apart. We do have many people like this in our society already, of course, many of them are safely behind bars.

Passion is good, love, hate, anger, sadness, joy these are all emotions and states without which, the world would be a very dull place.

Listen to any song you like, I bet you can tick off many of the above mentioned in the song, especially love!

The key issue is control, to learn to control, and to think before you act, or to find a way to usefully channel emotions.

There are times to control your anger, and there are times to let it out, to smash a few plates, instead of smashing a few skulls.

There are times to control your lust, and there are times to let it out, to have sex with a willing participant, instead of raping the innocent victim who doesn't wish your advances.

There are times to control your love, and there are times to let it out, to love those who love you, instead of wasting your love on those who wouldn't even give you a spare second of their time.

Egregious Egrogores - Toxic Organisations

In my varied career, I have worked for a few companies doing different jobs, and also been involved in various orgnisations. Each organisation/company, has an "egrogore" or group mind, a spirit if you like (common idea of "team spirit"). Now, you will never find a perfect company or organisation, but you will find ones with egrogores that are more positive, and more inclined to team work and building healthy internal relationships. Their are of course, organisations which are "toxic" and they have a generally offensive, agressive egrogore where most people simply look out for themselves, with very much a "screw the other guys" mentality!

What do you do in this situation?

RUN! QUICKLY!

Staying in a toxic organisation or company could be your downfall, it can lead to depression, dependancy on alcohol, insomnia, a deep feeling of frustration and stress.

These kind of organisations often have a very high turnover (people leaving), very few outside social events (if any), meetings where only "the important people" are invited and a general feeling of doom and frustration.

Clear your mind, meditate and banish often with laughter. Remember - there is always a way out, there will be other jobs and other organisations to join......where people are more inclined to work as a team and get along.

Coming Out Of The Magical Closet

One of the hardest things to do as a magician - is to decide whether and when to reveal the fact that you are a magician to others, especially non-magical folk.

My experiences so far:-

1. Some people think you are weird/strange, but as magic obviously doesn't work, all a load of mumbo jumbo, it's just a bit of harmless fun.
2. Some people think you are weird/strange, but are also fascinated by it, as magic is still seen as spooky and dark.
3. Some people (mainly religious) are scared or think you are evil, possessed or controlled by demons, good old classical religious ignorance at it's best (or worst).
4. Some "dabblers" claim to also be magicians, witches etc, but have never actually done much serious magical work themselves, and go "wow" when you talk about the work you have done or the results you have had.
5. Real magicians, who are interested in sharing experiences, recommending books/practices and working together.

1 and 2 are not too bad. 3 is bad unless you want to wind them up. 4 is bad because you are wasting your time and theirs, and you would be better advising them to either "s**t or get off the pot". 5 is obviously good!

Also, there is the simple path of silence, saying nothing, this can also be good at times, if only to save the hassle of trying to explain things to those untrained in magical work.

Why Love Spells Suck

When I was a kid, I was already interested in magic, and spells. One of the first spells I came across was something to do with putting a spider in a walnut shell in order to make someone fall in love with you. There are many variations of this, and many similar spells and love potions and love charms and ways to enchant that girl with the big boobs or that tall dark handsome boy! I reckon they all suck.

Why?
Ok, well assuming you don't have some particular magical reason for making someone fall in love with you (for example you are not trying to bed the boss so you can get a promotion)!
If you are really attracted to someone, and they don't feel the same (and isn't that often the way) why would you want to waste your time on them? There are plenty more fish in the sea and plenty more pebbles on the beach! They don't fancy you, or not interested in anything longer term, and you are? Move on, forget them. Go back to the bar or the dating site and try to find someone who is! Of course, there is also the problem of how long you keep the enchantment going if you do use magic to make someone fall in love with you? If the spell is broken, you are left with a broken heart and an empty bed, not nice.

Ok, still having trouble finding a suitable partner? Then work some magic to find a suitable mate, to put you in touch with someone who you will really connect with, someone who will really find you attractive and you them. Create a servitor, and set it to work on finding someone special.

Here's a little something I tried, maybe it will work for you too? It comes from the idea that each Tarot deck has it's own "spirit".

Before beginning the reading, invoke the spirit of your own Tarot deck by saying something like:-

"Spirit of *INSERT DECK NAME HERE (e.g. Crowley Thoth)* Tarot please reveal to me *INSERT QUESTION HERE*"

I am now reading The Book of Thothby Aleister Crowley.

I have always thought about using the Tarot for practical magick and enchantment, but have never really explored it fully as yet (unlike the runes). Anyway, when I was reading the Book Of Thoth, I was reading a description of one of the female court cards, and was thinking "wow, that is exactly like this person I know who is always causing problems for me and others". I know in the Tarot significators are used to signify the presence of someone in a reading, but what about taking it to another level, and using a card to represent someone who you want to enchant? Or maybe a selection of cards for a whole bunch of people who you would like to enchant? Creating a kind of "magical tarot theater" where the real world actors that you want to script (read enchant) are represented by Tarot cards.

As the bard himself once said:

Ok, these were just my mad thoughts pondering the meaning of existence as I was walking to new street station in Birmingham to catch the train to work this morning.

If, as some traditions and systems say, this world/universe is just an illusion created by our own minds, then what would happen if we all stopped thinking? Would the world just disappear or cease to exist? It's a bit like that age old riddle in philosophy that says "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

There are also some very esoteric ideas, made famous by the that excellent film The Matrix where the whole world is just an illusion created to enslave humanity (some very funky gnostic ideas here)!

Ok, so these are just my mad ramblings, because I have no recent tales of being woken up by demons or attacked by naughty spirits lately!

Scraping, bottom, of, barrel....maybe, or maybe some things to also drive you mad (but in a good way as Lon Milo Duquette says).

Originally, writing this book was an exercise in putting together a book which would help those, like myself, who were interested in both chaos and the more "traditional" forms of magick (Golden Dawn etc).

It always encourages authors to write more when sales start to increase, not just because of the money (very few people actually make a living from writing), but because people show they appreciate what is being written.

In a previous post I talked about the prayer of dedication I made to the Hoodoo spirits as part of my new paradigm (voodoo/hoodoo/shamanism).

The next night I had an experience where I felt myself being attacked at night by strange creatures, but was able to defend myself in my astral body (or possibly etheric, the differences are sometimes subtle I find). I then had quite a lucid dream and various other strange things happened.

Part of me was thinking, oh woah! This stuff is bad! However, I now see it as part of my continuing magical initiation, there may be times when certain entities and magically skilled persons would wish to try and have a "pop at me", and sleep as any magician or witch knows is often when we are at our most vulnerable. So, being able to defend myself when asleep is a very important magical skill, and maybe this is what those "Old Hoodoo Spirits" were teaching me?

Anyway, the fun continues....

I would like to add one book to this list though, not really a magical text, but takes a humorous look at demonology. If you have been sick of reading all the scary stuff about Goetia, and want some light relief, this book is great. The author must have done some research, and there are I think hidden in the text (whether intended or not) some serious tips on working with demons. It's well worth a read!

The Ritual Chaos Magic Workbook by Philip Harper

Phil Harper will be a new name to most of you, so the quality of information offered in this slim book may come as a surprise. Opening with the big questions - What is Magic and Why Do It? - he proceeds to an overview of Classical Western Magic and Chaos Magic. From the start, Harper writes with the authority of practical experience, in a competent no-nonsense fashion. The topics covered include reviews of basic Qabalah, basic magical training in the skills that will be familiar to anyone who has followed a well-rounded training scheme, the temple and tools, banishing rituals, sigils, divination and servitors.

This selection of material is, of course, not entirely original; if you are writing about using Qabalah as your main magical model, you have to give at least a review of a tradition of at least a couple of centuries' worth of magical literature. So the book goes over ground you could find in other books, but brings it all together in this one highly readable volume - adding the dimension of a rigorous Chaos Magick approach. The mix reminds me a bit of USA writer Steven Mace's blend of Thelemic qabalah with a critical, evidence-based CM approach (for samples of Mace's work see early editions of Chaos International).

Neither is this a mere flavour, the shallow eclecticism of the chaos magick dilletante - Harper is clearly serious about going the whole way, attaining all that can be attained on the magical path, and he shows abundant common sense in evaluating the magical orders on the market in the final chapter, Orders, Initiations and Grades.

So who is Mr Harper writing for here? Basically, a beginner, because it brings it all together in one book, but an intelligent beginner who does not want spoon feeding, and is not afraid of doing some disciplined magical work. In other words, a proper aspirant to the magical knowledge that can only be gained by working on yourself.

In other words, this book is sufficiently serious to put off most armchair magicians.

I say courageous because how many magicians do you know who would post up a video of themselves skrying the Enochian 29th Aethyr? And he writes that:

On the 10th of May 2010, at about 1:10am I successfully gained the Knowledge and Conversation of my Holy Gaurdian Angel.

Firstly, I was awoken shortly after going to bed by a loud banging on my front door, followed by a "boom boom boom" within my bedroom, and felt my bed vibrating with the constant thud. Next came a loud bang from the direction of the room I use as my Temple.

The noise got so bad, I knew I had to get up to investigate, but a voice said to me "Do not get up". I knew then this was my Holy Gaurdian Angel, and that the time had come to truly take control, but I could only do this on the spiritual plane (I had the night before walked from Birmingham City Centre to my home in Dudley invoking all through the journey, so far I very nearly couldn't carry on, this was the physical part of the working for me). So, I was able for the first time, to leave my body at will and "fly" into the room I use as my Temple. There I made the demon appear, and took action to deal with it. After this I then re-entered my body (out of breath, out of body work can be very demanding physically), and found myself filled with a peace that defied understanding, and knowledge that things would never be the same again.

For me, this work is now complete, or at least the first stage of it, though it dosen't match all the classic points and stages of the Abramelin system. I now believe I have obtained the grade of Magister Templi in the A.:.A.:. system of grades.

I am now going to burn the sigil I used to invoke the HGA, this has now served it's purpose for me, it is now time to move on.

Dissolution/Self-Loathing - I see this as the huge part
of my life that I fucked up with booze and self-pity.

By next Monday, I will have completed the six months of invoking my Holy Guardian Angel that I had originally set myself, as a "block" of magical work to do.

So am "I" done yet?

Yes and No.

Yes, I have had a roller coaster ride, from elation and euphoria, to darkness and misery, the classic initiation of the mystic. Also, not to mention some very strange, very real and very spooky material results! For me, the HGA has in a way disappeared, and yet is more present than ever. Crazy? No, not really. My Holy Guardian Angel is now ever present, but not as some separate entity or force, but as that silent witness that empowers me in all ways.

Secondly, No, this is not complete. However much work I have done, I am still in the constant process of initiation, that is called life. We never stop learning, we never stop feeling, we never stop growing, we are in motion, part of the cosmic mystery that is still unfolding. For me the HGA "model" is now folding itself back in, I think I will do one final major invocation at the end of the period, and then I will move on to another paradigm, knowing that my HGA is still always present, whatever magicians and occultists may argue it is.

The Dark Night of the Soul Experience

Many mystics (especially in the christian tradition) talked about a time when the divine had gone from their lives. They had continued to pray and be devoted but the familiar presence of God had gone for them completely.

In the Great Work of magic (gaining the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel in the traditional western tradition), there was also a time when despite the invocations, the presence of the Holy Guardian Angel had gone. The magician was left on there own, alone with their own thoughts, desires and fears. The doubts about how valid the magical path was, would come flooding through. There are also equivalents in the eastern traditions (Buddhism, Hinduism etc).

I personally hit this "dark night of the soul" period recently. It was a terrible time, many fears, doubts and a complete and utter sense of hopelessness and depression came over me. So what did I do? I did what the old texts and contemporary experts advised, I carried on with the invocations (actually I did them with even more gusto and passion), knowing that this too would pass. It did.

I am now back on track (actually I never really left it), no matter how hard it gets, how useless the invocations seem, you must continue. Your magical career depends on it (and possibly your sanity warn the old and new texts).

The HGA "model" is a hard one and not for the faint of heart or weak of spirit. However, be encouraged to continue, your Angel will not let you down.

Dealing With Desires: An Alternative Approach

We all have desires: power, lust, wealth. Most of the religious and spiritual traditions teach that strong desires, especially of the sexual nature (read "lust" here) are bad, and we must avoid these by cultivating a pure "holy" life, resist the devil was the old saying!

I find myself in a position where I am tempted to think the opposite, why resist why not simply give in to the point where you have exhausted the desire so much that it is no longer a desire?

- If it be for sex with a certain type of man/woman, then do it to the point where that particular type no longer interests you!

- If it be for a certain food (chocolate for example), do it to the point where the very sight of that food in future makes you sick!

- If it be for money, work to the point where you have so much money, you want to give it away (how many rich men and women become philanthropists in later life)!

The examples go on...

Maybe these are just the ramblings of Frater Pan in the wee small hours, but maybe I have a point. I'm sure someone else has written something similar to this somewhere, maybe Crowley, his life of excess rather than abstinence?

Who's afraid of the Abramelin!

If there is one book in Occult literature that can strike fear into the heart of the unwary dabbler (apart from the Goetia/Lesser Key of Solomon or the fabled Necronomicon) it has to be the "Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage", and I have been following a similar but much less extreme process myself for nearly six months in order to gain the Knowledge and Conversation of my Holy Guardian Angel (more about this in my next book)!

This book deals with a process whereby the magician attains union with the divine, think of it as the western equivalent of some of the eastern practices in Buddhist and Hindu traditions whereby Enlightenment, or an "awakened" state is achieved. It was said that to use (or in some cases even "gaze upon") the magic squares in the final part of the text without having done the six months of purification was highly dangerous, which is why the book gained a fair amount of notoriety.

The Art Of Writing Magical Books

I keep journals and have done since starting my magical work, as probably most magicians do, they are a permanent record of the work I do, and the results I get. I try to write most things in them, but if I had to write everything down that I did, and the results I got, I would never get time to do anything else, so I have to be selective and just write down the main things.

I am now starting to work on my next book, a follow up volume to the Ritual Chaos Magic Workbook, which will include more about my experiences and the results I have got (including some hair raising tales about dealing with demons, and Thanatos following me and popping up on MSN)!
